First Week: Flight & Arrival, Jurassic Coast, London

Another year, another homestay trip! Once again our second grade students have made the journey to Bournemouth, UK to spend two weeks learning English and living with host families.

After two long flights, a layover in Malaysia, and a private coach from Heathrow Airport, we finally arrived in Bournemouth. Students received a safety lecture from Dawn, a BEET Language Centre staff member, and soon met their host families for the first time. After a brief rest, students got to know Bournemouth through a walking tour to the town center and beach area. Unfortunately we had some classic British weather, but students braved the rain and managed to acclimate themselves a bit to their new surroundings.

Thanks to a UK bank holiday, students got to spend their first Monday in Bournemouth not in classes, but on an excursion to Jurassic Coast. To start, they spent a few hours at Lyme Regis to enjoy a quintessential English coastal town. Afterwards, they hiked along the coast to see Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, two stunning geological formations.

Students then started their regular class schedule from Tuesday, taking two 90-minute lessons in the morning then enjoying lunch at BEET’s famous cafeteria, ‘the Canteen’. They then got to see Bournemouth and the surrounding area through a private bus tour, further learning about what the region has to offer.

The rest of the week was full of various activities and opportunities: daily English lessons, an afternoon excursion to Castlepoint Shopping Centre, evening activities (games night, quiz night, murder mystery, disco karaoke), and of course evening and weekend time with host families.

We finished up the first week with a Sunday excursion to London, enjoying a full day of walking, shopping, and sightseeing. We started the morning on a tour around the city center, seeing major sites such as Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. Then students had hours of free time in the capital: some dived into shopping at Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Street, others popped into one of the many free museums and galleries, and a few had Harry Potter experiences going to Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station.

It certainly was an eventful first week in the UK, and we have already seen a jump in students’ English communication skills and confidence. Stay tuned for the next blog on the second and final week in Bournemouth!
