Departure & First Week of Classes

This summer, 34 second-year students set off on a two-week trip to Bournemouth, England. Each day they attended three hours of language classes and lived with local host families, giving them countless opportunities to practice English and deepen their cross-cultural understanding.

We departed on Friday, August 29, and after nearly 30 hours of travel, the group arrived early Saturday morning at London Heathrow Airport. From there, we boarded a coach to Bournemouth. At BEET Language Centre, students received a safety orientation from staff member Allison before meeting their host families for the first time.
After just two hours to settle in, everyone regrouped for a walking tour of the town. Although many students were tempted to take a nap, we encouraged them to power through in order to beat jet lag!
Bournemouth is best known for its long stretches of sandy beaches along the southern coast of England. While the water was too chilly for swimming, students enjoyed strolling along the pier and taking pictures of the seaside views.

Sundays were free days, giving students the chance to spend more time with their host families or explore the city with friends. Classes began on Monday when each BEET teacher announced who would be joining their class. Each morning, students attended two 90-minute classes with a short break in between. Compared to KI’s 45-minute classes, these longer sessions required extra focus and stamina, but our students rose to the challenge.

For lunch, students could either eat at the school canteen or venture into town to try local restaurants. Afternoons and evenings were free to spend as they wished, with an 11:00 p.m. curfew. Every evening, BEET also hosted activities such as game night, quiz night, karaoke, and even a table tennis competition. These events provided students with a fun way to connect with classmates from around the world.

Our students immersed themselves not only in English language learning but also in international friendships, meeting peers from Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and beyond.
